Midnight Madness’ Ejay Ofomata Signs Pro Contract For Portugal’s CAB Madeira

Midnight Madness’ very own Ejay Ofomata had the perfect end to this year’s tournament after coming away from the MM Women’s Travel Team experience with a professional contract to play for Portugal’s Pro A Team, CAB Madeira.

Midnight Madness, the UK’s biggest basketball competition, proved once again that ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ when the company embarked on a new quest to open previously closed doors for British based players.  For the first time in MM history, both the men’s and women’s winners and finalists earned a place on their respective travel teams who flew to the sunny island of Madeira to represent Great Britain in Portugal’s most prestigious pre-season tournament – The TAÇA Cup Championship.

Up against a number of Europe’s most talented players from professional teams across top divisions in Spain and Portugal, Ofomata proved she had what it takes to compete at an international level, finishing the tournament as the MM Women’s leading scorer and rebounder with averages of 19.8 ppg and 7.8 rpg, respectively.

Delighted by her performance and attention from international clubs and coaches, Ofomata, said, “The tournament in Portugal was an absolute blast. Playing at such a high level against top European competition with some amazing ladies on the MM Female Travel Team is pretty much a dream come true. I feel blessed and honoured to have been part of such an incredible experience, and to leave with a professional contract is simply unbelievable. For me, this is confirmation that God answers prayers, as well as proof that hard work along with persistence always pays off.”

President of Portugal’s CAB Madeira, Francisco Gomes, indicated his early interest in Ofomata to MM coaches and staff as her dominance on the MM Women’s team was clear from game one.

President Francisco Gomes said, “Ejay stood out to me as a player who is not afraid to leave it all out on the court for her team. She is a driver, a great rebounder, and knows how to attack the basket very well. She’s got the basketball skills, the personality and persona that we need in a player. We want professional players who can be role models and Ejay definitely fits that role.”

This season marks a new beginning for talented Ofomata who has already joined her new team in Portugal to begin training for Portugal’s Super Cup “winner-takes-all” fixture taking place this month, followed by a full season schedule in the Portuguese top flight.  Needless to say, MMTV will be sure to follow her journey every step of the way.

MM Founder Nhamo Shire said, “This is what it’s all about.  Midnight Madness has always been about opening new doors and creating new opportunities as we celebrate the talent and skills of our British ballers with the rest of the world.  I’m thankful more and more people both at home and abroad are now starting to take notice.  I couldn’t be happier for Ejay, she is such a hard-working, highly-skilled, positive role model for girls across the country to aspire to and I’m sure big things lay ahead for her now she’s earned her shot!”.

After shining much needed light on female basketball this past summer, Midnight Madness’ new relationship with CAB Madeira represents a new and exciting chapter for international growth for both women and men.  “Ultimately this sends out a message to players all across the UK, which is very simple; if you put the work in on your game and dedicate yourself to being the best you can be, we are here to bridge the gaps between where you are and where you want to be.  Ejay is proof of that and I’m sure there are more to come!” Shire concluded.

Ofomata’s signing brings an appropriate end to what has been a hugely successful summer for Midnight Madness and the many promising players who make the tournament what it is.  The ultimate ‘proving ground’ for players and largely untapped talent pool for teams and coaches worldwide, MM continues to deliver local, national and international opportunities for British players who participate in the tournament.
