On the eve of the MM ‘All-Nighter’ that brings together the best players from across the country for a basketball battle through the night to decide who progresses through to the semi-final round, Midnight Madness announce a ‘game changer’ to further fuel the 2014 competition.
The winners from the 2014 competition will be heading to the sun and sand of the Caribbean, representing the UK as the Midnight Madness Select Travel Team fly down to the tropical islands of St. Kitts & Nevis to compete in the the first annual Independence Classic Basketball Tournament. The Independence Classic is a key feature in the St. Kitts & Nevis Independence Festival, which celebrates sports, arts, music and culture in a week of island attractions in celebration of St. Kitts & Nevis Independence Day, which is officially on the 19th September.
The lucky ballers from the UK will fly out to St. Kitts on the 13th of September for a week-long basketball tournament, sponsored and supported by the Marriott Hotel, St. Kitts & Nevis Department Of Sports, St. Kitts Tourism Authority, St. Kitts & Nevis Amateur Basketball Association and the Reach One Teach One Foundation. Midnight Madness Select will play against the national teams of St. Kitts & Nevis and a number of other invited national teams from the Caribbean in a tournament that will be televised locally and be featured in media throughout the region.
Minister Glen Phillip, The Hon. Minister responsible for Sports on St. Kitts said, “We are excited by this opportunity to bring the Midnight Madness Select Basketball team to be part of the Federation’s Independence celebrations for 2014. This tournament is also part of my Ministry’s efforts to increase participation in basketball and also raise the level of the game among our players and also create another high end sports tourism product for the Federation. We are happy to partner with the St. Kitts Tourism Authority and other hotel partners including the Marriott to deliver the first ever St. Kitts & Nevis Independence Basketball Classic 2014.”
Midnight Madness founder and resident ‘Voice Of Reason’, Nhamo Shire added, “Midnight Madness teams have travelled all over the world playing in prestigious tournaments in all parts of America and Europe in the past, but the invitation to play in St. Kitts & Nevis Independence Classic breaks new ground for us. This is the first time we’ve officially come to the Caribbean and the occasion couldn’t be better. Playing in the official tournament that celebrates St. Kitts & Nevis Independence Day is a huge honour and we look forward to helping grow the game with the Federation through this fantastic event. We’d like to thank the Ministry of Sport, St. Kitts Tourism Authority, the Marriott Hotel and the Reach One Teach One Foundation for the invitation and opportunity”.
In another ‘MM first’ the winners who make the final travelling team will be made up of a mix of all competing age groups to ensure every division has an equal opportunity of making the basketball ‘trip of a lifetime’. “We’re all about access to opportunity at Midnight Madness and so we’ve made the competition fair for all 3 divisions this year. We’ll be taking the top 3 players from the over 23’s, under 23’s and under 18’s plus an overall ‘Mr Midnight Madness’ MVP, giving us 10 players who represent the present and future of our game in what should be an exciting Midnight Madness team” Shire concluded.
